Cole is the canon name of the male protagonist in Pokémon Umbra. His counterparts are Cindy (female) and Carter (non-binary). If you choose to play as Cole, then both Cindy and Carter do not exist in the Region.
In the Game[]
Role[]
If Cole is selected as the player character, his journey starts in Cadere Town in Vereshad. He chooses one of the three Starter Pokémon options from Professor Sakura. Cole goes on to gather the eight Badges from the Vereshad Region, beat the Pokémon League, and defeat his cousin, Mariana, to become the new Champion.
Background[]
Cole grew up constantly compared to his two successful cousins, Mariana and Martin. His parents were dismissive of his own achievements and instead focused their attention on his cousins. Cole decided to move out due to his parents' pressure, and while in search of a way to make a living, Professor Sakura offered the possibility of becoming a Pokémon Trainer. With a little persuasion from Professor Sakura, he decided to finally make a name for himself and started his own Pokémon Journey.
Personality[]
Cole has an easy-going personality that is able to match the player's personality through in-game dialogue choices. He starts his adventure with the intent of proving his parents wrong about his own abilities and ends up finding his own meaning to life along the way.
Relationships[]
Cole's in-game dialogue choices influence his relationships with some characters and can change the ending of the game.
Professor Sakura[]
Professor Sakura became the town's Pokémon Professor before the start of the game. She watched Cole grow up over the last decade and wanted to see him become a Pokémon Trainer. Professor Sakura kept pushing Cole until he finally decided to start his journey. The two are close, mainly because Professor Sakura listens to Cole about his family problems and wants to see him grow as a person. Professor Sakura truly believes Cole can become a better trainer than his cousins, and she secretly hopes Cole will come back to help her in the lab after his journey.
Damien[]
Cole grew up in the same town as Damien, but they did not play a lot as children. He is able to deepen their friendship throughout the game using the in-game dialogue choices. If Damien's friendship level is high, Cole learns about his family, goals, and personal struggles.
Eva[]
Cole meets Eva when they are receiving their Pokémon from Professor Sakura. At first, their relationship is curt and business-like, but over time they become friendly with each other. If Eva's friendship level is high, Cole learns about her personality, goals, and personal struggles.
Mariana[]
Mariana is Cole's older cousin and Martin's older sister. They have lived in the same town all their lives. Cole's parents tend compare the two, which causes Cole to be reserved around Mariana. Mariana always sticks up for Cole, especially around her brother. She views Cole as a younger brother and wants to see him succeed in life, and she sometimes pushes Cole in the hopes of helping him. While Cole does enjoy spending time with Mariana, he often feels buried in Mariana's shadow. Mariana left their hometown to become the region's Pokémon Champion before the start of the game.
Martin[]
Martin is Cole's older cousin and Mariana's younger brother. They have lived in the same town all their lives. Cole's parents tend to compare the two, which causes Cole to be reserved around Martin. Martin often feels inferior to his older sister, and he takes his frustration out on Cole by belittling him. He does want to see Cole succeed in life, but ultimately he tries to stay one rung ahead of him on their family's social ladder. Martin left their hometown to become the region's Pokémon Champion before the start of the game. He did not become the Champion, but he did become the Fairy Gym Leader.
Hollow[]
Hollow is an odd character that Cole keeps running into. He appears randomly to help him throughout his Pokémon journey. They have a friendly relationship throughout the game, and he seems to have an interest in Cole's personal life. If Hollow's friendship level is high, Cole learns about his motivations, goals, and personal struggles.
Team Radiance[]
Cole crosses paths with members of Team Radiance often throughout his Pokémon journey. Team Radiance views Cole as a nuisance and strive to remove him from their schemes. Cole typically foils their plots as he continues his journey.
