Carter is the canon name of the non-binary protagonist in Pokémon Umbra. Their counterparts are Cole (male) and Cindy (female). If you choose to play as Carter, then both Cole and Cindy do not exist in the Region.

In the Game[]

Role[]

If Carter is selected as the player character, their journey starts in Cadere Town in Vereshad. They choose one of the three Starter Pokémon options from Professor Sakura. Carter goes on to gather the eight Badges from the Vereshad Region, beat the Pokémon League, and defeat their cousin, Mariana, to become the new Champion.

Background[]

Carter grew up constantly compared to their two successful cousins, Mariana and Martin. Their parents were dismissive of their own achievements, and their parents instead focused their attention on Mariana and Martin. Carter decided to move out due to their parents' pressure, and while in search of a way to make a living, Professor Sakura offered the possibility of becoming a Pokémon Trainer. With a little persuasion from Professor Sakura, they decided to finally make a name for themself and started their own Pokémon Journey.

Personality[]

Carter has an easy-going personality that is able to match the player's personality through in-game dialogue choices. They start their adventure with the intent of proving their parents wrong about their own abilities and ends up finding their own meaning to life along the way.

Relationships[]

Carter's in-game dialogue choices influence their relationships with some characters and can change the ending of the game.

Professor Sakura[]

Professor Sakura became the town's Pokémon Professor before the start of the game. She watched Carter grow up over the last decade and wanted to see them become a Pokémon Trainer. Professor Sakura kept pushing Carter until they finally decided to start their journey. The two are close, mainly because Professor Sakura listens to Carter about their family problems and wants to see them grow as a person. Professor Sakura truly believes Carter can become a better trainer than their cousins, and she secretly hopes Carter will come back to help her in the lab after their journey.

Damien[]

Carter grew up in the same town as Damien, but they did not play a lot as children. They are able to deepen their friendship throughout the game using the in-game dialogue choices. If Damien's friendship level is high, Carter learns about his family, goals, and personal struggles.

Eva[]

Carter meets Eva when they are receiving their Pokémon from Professor Sakura. At first, their relationship is curt and business-like, but over time they become friendly with each other. If Eva's friendship level is high, Carter learns about her personality, goals, and personal struggles.

Mariana[]

Mariana is Carter's older cousin and Martin's older sister. They have lived in the same town all their lives. Carter's parents tend compare the two, which causes Carter to be reserved around Mariana. Mariana always sticks up for Carter, especially around her brother. She views Carter as a younger sibling and wants to see them succeed in life, and she sometimes pushes Carter in the hopes of helping them. While Carter does enjoy spending time with Mariana, they often feel buried in Mariana's shadow. Mariana left their hometown to become the region's Pokémon Champion before the start of the game.

Martin[]

Martin is Carter's older cousin and Mariana's younger brother. They have lived in the same town all their lives. Carter's parents tend to compare the two, which causes Carter to be reserved around Martin. Martin often feels inferior to his older sister, and he takes his frustration out on Carter by belittling them. He does want to see Carter succeed in life, but ultimately he tries to stay one rung ahead of them on their family's social ladder. Martin left their hometown to become the region's Pokémon Champion before the start of the game. He did not become the Champion, but he did become the Fairy Gym Leader.

Hollow[]

Hollow is an odd character that Carter keeps running into. He appears randomly to help them throughout their Pokémon journey. They have a friendly relationship throughout the game, and he seems to have an interest in Carter's personal life. If Hollow's friendship level is high, Carter learns about his motivations, goals, and personal struggles.

Team Radiance[]

Carter crosses paths with members of Team Radiance often throughout their Pokémon journey. Team Radiance views Carter as a nuisance and strive to remove them from their schemes. Carter typically foils their plots as they continue their journey.
