Boulderoach are bipedal, brown inspects. Their segmented stomachs and four front arms are tan. The mandibles, antennae, and back exoskeleton are darker brown, while their heads and necks are darker still. Rockroach make the armor on their back from chewed up rock, sand, and globs of mud. Boulderoach have thin arms, which they perpetually hold limp. These are useless, beyond walking on all fours.
Gender Differences[]
Boulderoach have no gender differences.
Behavior[]
Boulderoach use rocks and earth to make their bodies. In order to do this, they chew up materials until it becomes a paste and use it to join smaller stones onto their shells. Their preferred material of use are cave walls, but Boulderoach are resilient. They will make their homes in underground tunnels and old buildings for the material it provides. When none of these options are around, Boulderoach will make their own tunnels in the ground, chewing in the bedrock of the earth as they go.
In urban settings, Boulderoach are considered a danger. Because they reside in dilapidated buildings and tunnels, an infestation of Boulderoach risks the architectural integrity of the structure. When left unchecked, they will destroy subways, sewer systems, and cheap apartment buildings. If this is discovered too late, the building or tunnel will collapse. Boulderoach who burrow in inhabited areas are also a danger: in their digging, they may create sinkholes.
Due to their defensive strength, it is difficult to get rid of Boulderoach entirely. So, humans have found ways for Boulderoach to do their digging productively. Trained Boulderoach are popular with miners, as they can be set loose in a cavern with the instruction not to eat a certain mineral or jewel. Boulderoach are also used by construction workers in places where heavy-duty digging equipment cannot reach. Their heavy shells lend them protection from workplace hazards.
Habitat[]
Boulderoach are most commonly found in caves. In more recent years, they have also taken to dilapidated buildings, subway tunnels, and sewer systems. This is because there is plenty of concrete and brick for them to chew apart, and make their own armor with. Cities do regular checks in their undergrounds for Boulderoach infestations. If ignored, Boulderoach could create a sinkhole.
